1938年大阪府池田市生まれ。デザイナーから転身し、岩宮武二、細江英公の助手を経て、1964年にフリーの写真家として活動を始める。1967年『カメラ毎日』に掲載した「にっぽん劇場」などのシリーズで日本写真批評家協会新人賞を受賞。近年では、サンフランシスコ近代美術館（1999年・メトロポリタン美術館、ジャパンソサイエティー（ニューヨーク）巡回）、国立国際美術館（2011年）、テートモダン（ロンドン）で行われたウィリアム・クラインとの合同展（2012〜13年）ほか、国内外で大規模な展覧会が開催され、国際写真センター（ニューヨーク）Infinity Award功労賞を受賞（2012年）、フランス政府より芸術文化勲章（2018年）、ハッセルブラッド国際写真賞（2019年）を受賞するなど世界的に高い評価を受けている。
